The purpose of an external review is for an experienced and professional consultant to review governance practice and to make recommendations for strengthening governance in the school.

The NGA external review framework has been developed primarily to respond to Ofsted judgements which identify issues with governance. However, the review process is also suitable for governing boards who wish to commission an independent view of their governance practice, especially if they are looking to move from ‘good’ to ‘outstanding’, or if there are other issues which need addressing.

The external review process consists of:

  • A scoping session with the head and the chair, the clerk and if possible, another governor
  • A review of the governing body’s documentation.
  • A self review session for all governors and senior leaders. I will lead the governing body through the eight elements of effective governance, guiding the governing board as it self-diagnoses its own strengths and areas for development. The session also includes a focus on the Ofsted framework and the criteria Ofsted use when they are making judgements about governance.
  • A written report capturing the elements identified in the self review session and recommendations for action.
  • There is also the option of governors/ trustees completing an individual self review, Clerk review and 360 degree Chair review which the consultant can use to further focus the facilitated aspect of the review.
  • Creation of a Governors Action Plan

The external review process can usually be arranged at short notice, and I am able to meet tight timescales.
